Need a Bible Verse to Trust God in Hard Times? (50+ Scriptures)

bible verse to trust god in hard times

Looking for a Bible verse to trust God in hard times? Discover 50+ Scriptures for comfort, strength, and hope when life feels overwhelming.

No matter what trial you are going through, know that He sees you and loves you deeply.  God has not forgotten you – in fact, you are constantly on His mind.

He has a plan for this difficult season and is working actively on your behalf.  If you need a Bible verse to trust God in hard times, this list is meant to bring you peace and comfort during this season. And be sure to read the prayer at the end – you’re welcome to make it your own.

God’s Word is much more powerful than quotes or a self-help book (although He uses those, too).  As Isaiah 55:11 tells us, “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

In other words, Scripture always has a specific purpose to fulfill. God always uses it to accomplish something.  It will never return void, and God wants to use it in your life.

That’s what we need most in hard times: to hold onto the truth of God’s word because it is alive and active.

I’ve seen this happen in my own life, time and time and time again.  When my daughter was 11 months old, she endured a blood disorder and autoimmune disease, where she basically had no immune system.  I struggled so much during that time, but I can honestly say that as I held onto His truth, I felt Him with me more than any other time in my life.

After a few years, my daughter went into full remission.  Now my daughter is a healthy, strong, independent sophomore in high school who has an empathy for others who are hurting.  God has used that disease in her life to make her who she is today, and I look forward to seeing all He has planned.

Don’t forget that there will be an end to your pain, and God looks to redeem all of the brokenness in this world.  Know that good things are ahead and God has a purpose for your pain.

How Do We Trust God in Difficult Times?

In seminary, I learned that looking at the biblical text in the original language adds a greater depth of understanding. In the Old Testament, the most common Hebrew word for trust is batach (בָּטַח), appearing about 120 times.  Batach carries the sense of feeling safe or secure, often used with the idea of leaning your full weight onto something reliable.

We find batach in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”  That literally means, “Lean with your full weight into the reliable safety of the Lord with all your heart.”

The most common Greek word in the New Testament for “trust” is pistis, which involves a belief and an action.  It’s not only about agreeing with a fact but placing reliant trust in God.

As Christians, we have the unfathomable ability to sleep soundly in the palm of God’s hand, because that’s exactly where He has us.  No matter what storms in life have surrounded you, you are untouched by danger because the Lord Jesus Christ holds and protects you.

Read through these verses knowing that you are completely and utterly safe in the hand of God.

How to Apply These Verses When You’re Struggling to Trust God

Sometimes when you are in the midst of life’s storms, the hardship can be so overwhelming that it is difficult to have faith and trust the Lord.

Here are some easy practices to help you place your struggle in the hands of your Creator.

  1. Journal Verses –  Pick a couple of verses that appeal to you and consider writing them over and over in a journal.  Focus on the words of each verse, and contemplate what they mean for your exact situation.
  2. Repeat a Verse To Yourself – You can also just repeat a verse in your head as you do an activity.  This works because the brain believes what you repeatedly tell it as it relies on patterns and makes new neural pathways through repetition, treating familiar as what it believes.
  3. Use a Prayer Box – When I have trouble trusting God with a worry, I use a piece of paper to write my prayer request and a verse.  I get detailed in my request and pray this request to God as I write.  Then, I fold up the request and put it in a prayer box.  This helps me to remember that I have entrusted it fully to God and I don’t need to “pick it up” again by worrying.
  4. Lectio Divina – This is basically a way to meditate on Scripture. This practice helps you to dwell upon the verse and spend time with God in it.  It’s also a great way to hear from Him. You can read more here:  Lectio Divina

A Prayer for Trusting God in Hard Times

God, I feel surrounded on all sides.  I am overwhelmed, and my heart is heavy.

But Lord, You are before all things, and in You all things hold together.  You are bigger than my circumstances, and despite Your vastness and power, Your eyes are always set on me.

You hold me with your righteous right Hand, and I am inscribed in Your very palms.

God, I give this circumstance to You, knowing that my hope is found in You.

You are for me, and You love me dearly.  My concerns are important to You, and You are fully aware of every detail.

Redeem this situation for good and have Your will be done. Help me hold fast to You even when my emotions tell me otherwise

Thank You that hard circumstances come to an end; please guide and protect me until that time.

Help me to remember the great love You have for me as Your beloved daughter/son.

FAQ – When Needing a Bible Verse to Trust God in Hard Times…

What Bible verse helps you trust God in hard times?

For me, knowing that God is actively working for my good is reassuring (Romans 8:28-29).  When I am anxious, I often feel like God has forgotten about me, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  I like Romans 8:31, which says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”  Remember that even when things look hopeless, God sees you and has a plan.

What is the best verse for anxiety and trusting God?

Matthew 6:34 says, “Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself.”  This verse explains what I like to call “manna mode”.  When the Israelites were in the desert, God gave them manna from the sky only for that day.  When they tried to hoard manna and save it for tomorrow, it would spoil.  In the same way, God’s mercies are new every day. He will give you everything you need in the present, and He will be just as faithful in the future.

How do I trust God when I don’t understand what’s happening?

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”  When I don’t understand what’s happening around me, I can trust that God does, and He comprehends the circumstances on a level far above my own intellect.  Not only that, He is fully in control of the situation, no matter how far it is above my understanding.

What does it mean to trust God with all your heart?

As mentioned in the intro of this post, one of the Hebrew words for trust in the  Old Testament is batachBatach means to lean into something with your whole weight because it is reliable.  It’s the same idea of sitting in a hammock and trusting it because you know it will hold you up.  When we trust God with all our heart, it is a kind of surrender.  We hand Him whatever we are struggling with.  The word for heart is “lev,” which means mind, will, and emotion.  We tend to think it means just our emotions, but it is trusting God with our mind and will.  To trust God with your heart means to trust your full self to God’s hands without leaving a foot on the ground for precautionary support.  You are allowing God to fully support you.

What Psalm is about trusting God in trouble?

My mom’s favorite Psalm when it comes to trusting God in trouble is Psalm 23.  My mother is a breast cancer survivor and has been for 12 years now.  When she went through her treatments, she would recite all of Psalm 23 over and over.   It provided her a great deal of comfort and strength during a tough time.
