Did you know that most couch cushion covers can be washed? Here’s everything you need to about washing couch cushion covers in the washing machine.

Your couch hosts countless moments of daily life—and all the dirt that comes with them.

Our sofa gets lots of use from my family and also our two dogs. For that reason, I have been washing my couch covers at least 2-3 times a year with great results.

This guide will show you if your particular couch cushion covers are machine washable and the dos and don’ts of washing them.

I spend a lot of time on this couch…writing, doing Bible study, snuggling with my dogs…and it SHOWS. There aren’t any huge stains but it’s just really dingy and gross.

To say this couch is “well-loved” is an understatement, which is why it’s so nice to throw the kitchen covers in the washer.

How To Know If Your Couch Cushion Covers Are Washable

Even if your couch’s tag doesn’t explicitly say it’s machine washable, there’s a good chance you can still safely wash the cushion covers.

According to the main buyer at a local furniture store, here’s what you want to look for.

Take a look at the tag. If your couch fabric is polyester or rayon, you can wash the covers in the washing machine. You don’t want to wash them if they are made of a natural fabric like linen.

Let’s get started!

Supply List for Washing Couch Cushion Covers in the Washing Machine

Defunkify Laundry Detergent

Folex Spray

Fabric Shaver (Optional)

Don’t forget to check out my post on how easy it is to FIX SAGGING COUCH CUSHIONS.  Along with washing the cushion covers, this is the fastest way to make an old couch look new again.

How to Wash Couch Cushion Covers in the Washing Machine

Step 1: Remove the Cushion Covers

Find the zipper on the bottom edge of your couch cushion. You can usually find it in one of the corners.

Unzip and remove all the covers from the cushions.

Now is a good time to wash your throw pillow covers also.

Step 2: Wash your Couch Cushion Covers

Wash a few cushion covers at a time in your washer. I like to use Defunkify (click here for the current price) because it’s gentle and great at removing stains.

Wash the covers on the delicate cycle in with cold water.

Step 3: Lay Out Your Cushion Covers to Dry

Let your cushion covers air dry. We don’t want to dry them in the dryer in case the zippers or lining are not polyester.

When they are mostly dry, put them back on the cushions. Since they are slightly damp, they will better form to the shape of the cushions for a more finished look.

Clean the Rest of Your Couch’s Upholstery

My not-so-secret weapon for spot-cleaning fabric is Folex (see the current price here). It does an amazing job on removing stains on upholstery fabric and rugs.

While your cushion covers are in the washer, take this opportunity to clean the rest of your couch.

Spot clean with Folex and a microfiber cloth. Vacuum the area under the cushions as well and don’t forget to get the corners.

How to Fix Pilling on a Couch

Old couches can often have pilling, which is the formation of small tangled balls. This is so easy to remove with a Fabric Shaver (click here for the current price)

Just run the shaver over the top, and you will have smooth upholstery fabric again in no time.

I’m so happy with how my sofa turned out! Even though it is 8 years old, it looks brand new just by washing the cushions and spot cleaning the rest.

I think the reason I’ve had this sofa for so long is because I keep getting such great results by washing the cushion covers 2-3 times a year.

Even the throw pillows look such much brighter after washing the covers.

RENOVATE YOUR FAITH: Leave The Results to God

Just as an actor plays his or her role in a movie, we each have our individual part to play in God’s plan.  But God is the director, producer and editor of our stories. He perfectly orchestrates our role and can see the ending even when we don’t.

As actors in God’s plans, our role is to play our part He gives us but also to have faith to know that God will do the heavy lifting. He’s the one who has full control, and we can rest in knowing that we can trust Him with our lives.

Sometimes I try to play the director in my own life and that’s where I struggle because that’s not my job.  Only God can fulfill that role.  READ THE REST HERE
