What to Know Before Painting High-Use Furniture Pieces
Not all furniture pieces should be painted equally. For example, a consol table in your guest room isn’t going to get nearly as much use as your dining table and chairs. High-use furniture pieces like a coffee table need to be refinished in such a way that they can handle the daily demands of your family and pets.
My husband and I built this coffee table about 10 years ago: How to Build a Turned Leg Coffee Table In that amount of time, this table has handled the daily abuse really well considering all my family and two large dogs dish out.

For this reason, we are going to use really durable paint and also a protective topcoat to ensure that the beautiful new finish stays that way! In addition, we will use colors and sheens that also lend well to being life-proof.
Is It Better to Paint or Stain a Coffee Table?
The most forgiving tabletop color will always be a stained top. Because staining can always be very unpredictable, I use a faux stain with paint. With my faux stain, you can also “stain” over a painted surface without stripping. (How to Faux Stain Furniture – 10 Shades to Pick From)
The variability of a faux stain table top makes any minor dents, scratches or coffee stains very hard to see. For that reason, I like to stain the top of high-use tables and paint the base a solid color.

What Color To Paint a Coffee Table?
Some colors are more “dirt and dent” friendly than others. As you can see, my white coffee table base shows every little scractch and scrape while highlighting messes.
For a high-use furniture piece, I recommend going with a medium to dark solid paint color on the body of the piece. For this project, we will be painting the base of my coffee table matte black.
Best Paint For a Coffee Table
Latex is the best way to go if you want durability. Some latex paints are more durable than others. For this project I knew I’d only needed a small amount of paint so I opted to buy a sample container of Behr Premium Plus ($6) which is somewhat durable on it’s own and then adding a top coat.
The top coat I’m using is Varathane’s water-based clear coat which leaves no streaks and never yellows while doing most of the heavy lifting in terms of durability.

How to Paint a Coffee Table Without Sanding
Before you get started, be sure to put down an old sheet to protect your floor. I like to elevate furniture pieces as much as possible so they don’t hurt my lower back so I proped my coffee table up on 4 5-gallon buckets.
Can you use a paint sprayer or spray paint for a coffee table?
Don’t spray paint a coffee table unless it’s really small and you are waiting to faux stain the top. While spray painting is fast and great for furniture with lots of spindles, it’s not cost-effective and it’s hard to get a smooth finish on flat surfaces.
A lot of people use a paint sprayer but I’ve never been able to justify the expense, the prep time and amount of outdoor area needed.
I love this no-sand technique because I can do it indoors with minimal mess!
Step 1: Always Degloss Before Painting an Old Coffee Table
The first step for painting an old coffee table is cleaning but fortunately, the deglosswer we are using cleans AND deglosses in one step!
Do you have to sand a coffee table before painting?
It’s true that you need to scuff up the old furniture’s surface so that the new primer and paint adhere well to it. This is most often accomplished with scuff sanding but fortunately, this deglosser we are using will accomplish the same with less mess. If our furniture piece had a lot of damage, a sander would be a better option: How to Sand Furniture in 5 Minutes
To degloss our coffee table, put about an inch of the deglosser in a bowl. Absorb some deglosser with an old rag and wipe down one section of your furniture piece. Work in one section at a time; I like to start with the top first.
Use a little bit of elbow greese to scrub the surface with the deglosser in a circular motion.

After wiping the first section, rinse the rag in the deglosser, if the deglosser is not longer clear, pour some new deglosser and wipe it again. Do this until the whole furniture piece has been wiped down.

Give the deglosser 30 minutes to dry before you prime.

Step 2: Start Your Coffee Table Makeover With A Good Primer
For this project, I used Stix which is a water-based primer known for it’s good adhesion and I also love that it doesn’t leave brush marks.

Brush on the primer in a smooth coat all over the furniture piece. It WILL be uneven and you won’t have solid coverage. That’s ok!
Primer is great because it’s the glue that keeps our new finish adhered to our furniture. I like to say that primer sticks to things and paint sticks to primer.

Step 3: How to Paint a Coffee Table Black
Rinse out your brush and dry it as much as you can with paper towels. Dip your brush in your paint and start to get a first coat on the base.
Your first coat of paint will look really uneven and splotchy but that’s ok! We will get full coverage on the second coat. You’ll also notice the second coat of paint goes on smoother.
Let your first coat dry 45 minutes.

Best Black Paint Color for Furniture
In my opinion, Sherwin Williams Black Magic is the best black shade paint color as it works really well as a nuetral black, meaning it coordinates well with cool and warm shades. I use it on every black furniture piece I paint and it never lets me down.
Tricorn Black would be my second favorite as it looks really good with gold hardware.

Using a Faux Finish For Your Coffee Table Top
For the top, I used my Faux Pottery Barn Seadrift Finish that you can find here: How to Create a Pottery Barn Seadrift Finish with Paint
This is my favorite faux finish and the blog post above shows you exactly how to create this finish with images and a video. For more faux finish options, click here: Faux Finish Options for Painted or Stained Wood Furniture

Step 4: How to Make Your Coffee Table Durable with A Clear Coat
After testing all the top brands of clear coats, I only use Varathane Water-based Polyurethane.
Not all furniture pieces need a top coat but the last step of my faux finish is a top coat and since this is coffee table is in a high-traffic area, I’m using on the base as well.

Gently stir the can of clear coat with a plastic spoon. (Don’t shake it because that will leave small bubbles in the surface.)
I like to use a foam brush for clear coat. Stir the can and then pour a small amount onto a paper plate. When you run out, stir the can again before adding more to the paper plate.
Work in long strokes along the length of the grain and be sure to watch for drips.
Use two to three coats, 30 minutes apart. (The can says to sand in between but don’t do it; that’s a great way to ruin your finish).

How to Get a Matte Finish on Any Furniture Piece
This clear coat (click here to find it online) has another huge advantage! I noticed that my coffee table was a little shinier than I wanted. The nice thing about this clear coat is that it also brings down the sheen to a nice matte finish. After applying the top coat and letting it dry, my coffee table had the beautiful matte black look I was wanting!
If you have a previously stained or painted furniture piece, you can easily give it a matte finish with one this one product.
You don’t even have to sand! Just use a slightly damp magic eraser to wipe down the furniture piece. (This will help the clear coat adhere). When it dries apply the clear coat, as I show you above.
Those those of you who are chalk paint fans, this will give you the look of chalk paint but better durability!

painted coffee table before and after

What do you think? I’m so happy with how my coffee table turned out. The top has a much more modern faux finish.
The black paint will hold up so well since it has a clear coat and black will hide any dirt or scratches.

All in all, I love furniture makeovers that are fast and straigh-forward like this one. I repainted this piece in my entry way and not having to sand made this process simple and mess-free.
