Favorite Female Christian Authors
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I have a habit of falling in love with an author and then buying everything they’ve ever written. Here are the women whose books I keep coming back to, and whose names you’ll see again and again on this list.
Lysa TerKeurst โ If you’ve ever felt like your emotions are running the show, Lysa writes like she’s sitting across the table from you with coffee, not lecturing from a pulpit. It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way and Forgiving What You Can’t Forget are two of her most-loved titles, and they’re a great place to start if you’re new to her.
Sarah Young โ Her devotional Jesus Calling has sold millions of copies for a reason. It’s written in first person, as if Jesus Himself is speaking directly to you, which makes it feel more like a quiet conversation than a study.
Priscilla Shirer โ Known for deep, Scripture-heavy Bible studies (Fervent, The Armor of God), Priscilla is who I reach for when I want to actually dig into the Word, not just read something encouraging.
Beth Moore โ One of the most influential Bible teachers of the last few decades. Her studies, like Believing God and Breaking Free, go deep, and they ask a lot of you, in the best way.
Ann Voskamp โ Her writing style is almost poetic. One Thousand Gifts changed the way I think about gratitude, and it’s a book I revisit every few years.
Aundi Kolber โ I’ve mentioned her book Try Softer elsewhere on this blog, and I’ll say it again here: if you’re a recovering perfectionist like me, her Christian-counselor perspective on grace and nervous-system healing is worth your time.
Emily P. Freeman: If decisions keep you up at night, The Next Right Thing offers a gentle way to choose without the overthinking. Fellow recovering perfectionists, Grace for the Good Girl is for you.
Christine Hoover: Messy Beautiful Friendship is one of the most practical books on building real friendships as a grown woman. From Good to Grace is a freeing read if you’ve been trying to earn God’s approval by being “good enough.”

Women’s Spiritual Growth Books by Christian Authors (Female)
These books are by female Christian authors on various topics of spiritual growth and encouragement. The objective was to list the books (in no particular order) that have had the most impact on myself or women I know.
After years of seminary reading, I got pretty picky about what makes it onto my nightstand. These are the books that earned their spot.
1. Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds by Jen Wilkin
We all know itโs important to study Godโs Word.
But sometimes itโs hard to know where to start. Whatโs more, a lack of time, emotionally driven approaches, and past frustrations can erode our resolve to keep growing in our knowledge of Scripture. How can we, as Christian women, keep our focus and sustain our passion when reading the Bible?
Offering a clear and concise plan to help women go deeper in their study of Scripture, this book will equip you to engage in the word of God in a way that trains your mindย andย transforms your heart.ย FIND IT HERE

2. It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way: Finding Unexpected Strength When Disappointments Leave You Shattered by Lysa Terkeurst
Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a moment, but others may shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned, and we quietly start to wonder about the reality of Godโs goodness and if He can be trusted.

3. Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World: Finding Intimacy With God in the Busyness of Life by Joanna Weaver
With nearly a million copies sold, Joanna Weaver’s popular book shows women how to blend intimacy with Jesus and service for Him.
An invitation for every woman who feels she isn’t godly enough… isn’t loving enough… isn’t doing enough. The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet… but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him… yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.
With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story and its creative, practical strategies, Joanna shows how all of us -Marys and Marthas alike- can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy. FIND IT HERE

4. The Next Right Thing: A Simple, Soulful Practice for Making Life Decisions by Emily P. Freeman
If you’ve ever stood frozen in front of a decision, big or small, convinced there’s one perfect answer and you’d better not miss it, this book is for you. (Hi, recovering perfectionist here, raising my hand.)
Emily P. Freeman, host of The Next Right Thing podcast, offers a gentle, practical approach to decision-making that trades overwhelm for peace. Instead of demanding you map out your entire future, she invites you to simply take the next right step, in love.
The chapters are short and easy to read in one sitting, which makes it perfect for a morning quiet time or a few minutes before bed. Each one closes with a prayer, so it reads less like a self-help manual and more like a conversation with a wise friend who keeps pointing you back to Jesus. FIND IT HERE

You have an enemy . . . and heโs dead set on destroying all you hold dear and keeping you from experiencing abundant life in Christ. And again and again she learned that even in the midst of shattered dreams, Godโs plans brought greater joy than she could have imagined. FIND IT HERE

As she puts it: “A few years ago, I found myself exhausted and isolated, my soul and body sick. I was tired of being tired, burned out on busy. And, it seemed almost everyone I talked with was in the same boat: longing for connection, meaning, depth, but settling for busy.
“I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, writer, and I know all too well that settling feeling. But over the course of the last year, I’ve learned a way to live, marked by grace, rest, play and God’s love. And it’s changing everything when focusing on being a godly woman.

Books on Being a Godly Wife (Top Christian Marriage Books for Women)
1. The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God by Timothy and Kathy Keller
Based on the acclaimed sermon series by New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller, this book shows everyoneโChristians, skeptics, singles, longtime married couples, and those about to be engagedโthe vision of what marriage should be according to the Bible.
Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that your spouse is there to help you realize your potential; that marriage does not mean forever, but merely for now; and that starting over after a divorce is the best solution to seemingly intractable marriage issues. But these modern-day assumptions are wrong. Timothy Keller, with insights from Kathy, his wife of thirty-seven years, shows marriage to be a glorious relationship that is also misunderstood and mysterious.ย The Meaning of Marriageย offers instruction on how to have a successful marriage and is essential reading for anyone who wants to know God and love more deeply in this life. This is also a great book if you are a pastor’s wife.ย FIND IT HERE

Sacred Marriage doesn’t just offer techniques to make a marriage happier. It does contain practical tools, but what married Christians most need is help in becoming holier husbands and wives. Sacred Marriage offers that help with insights from Scripture, church history, time-tested wisdom from biblical times, Christian classics, and examples from today’s marriages.
Sacred Marriageย reveals how marriage trains us to love God and others well, how it exposes sin and makes us more aware of God’s presence, how good marriages foster good prayer, how married sex feeds the spiritual life, and how to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading to have a close relationship.ย FIND IT HERE

2. Single, Dating, Engaged, Married: Navigating Life and Love in the Modern Age by Ben Stuart
Navigating the Four Critical Seasons of Relationship
The vast majority of young people will still pass through the key phases of singleness, dating, engagement and marriage in their twenties. Yet they are delaying marriage longer than any generation in human history. Why?
For the first time in history, the average age for an American woman having her first child, 26, is younger than the average age of her first marriage, 27. More children than ever are growing up in fatherless homes, despite the overwhelming evidence that in every measurable way this is bad for the child.
Like a sailor on turbulent seas, we need to look up and see the North Star: the fixed points in the sky whereby we might navigate the objective realities in life. We need the skill-set to know how to journey through life and how to select the right people to journey alongside. In this book we will chart a course through the four relational phases that the vast majority of human beings on the planet will pass through in their twenties: singleness, dating, engaged and married. In each of these phases, we will look at what eternal purposes should be pursued in each stage, and how to pursue them.
Our desires for intimacy are powerful. This power can be constructive or destructive. This is one of the best books for single Christian women as it shows our satisfaction and our safety will be ensured if we can aim these powerful desires toward divine purposes.ย FIND IT HERE

From finding the right friends to discovering the upside of failure,ย Everybody, Alwaysย points the way to embodying love by doing the unexpected, the intimidating, the seemingly impossible. 2. Speak Love: Making Your Words Matter by Annie F. Downs
You’ve heard, “Think before you speak” a hundred times, and probably shrugged it off just like that other insightful phrase, “Your face will freeze like that if you’re not careful.” But unlike a facial expression, our words do stick around. (Just think about middle school a sec. See?) Which means everything you sayโfrom what tell your friends, whisper about your enemies, post online, mutter to yourself, or even say to the celebrity you ran into at the coffee shopโcarries a whole lot of power.
The question is, are you ready to use that power to make a real difference? Because the truth is, you could be part of the first generation who uses their words to build up and not tear down, and even kill the mean girl mentality. Through very funny stories, Scripture, and a real understanding of the good, bad, and ugly ways we can use our words, Annie Downs explores the difference you can make when you speak love to others, to God, and even to yourself. Because when you speak love, you speak life. And that’s what matters. FIND IT HERE

3. The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God by Lee Strobel
โMy road to atheism was paved by scienceโฆbut, ironically, so was my later journey to God.โโLee Strobel
During his academic years, Lee Strobel became convinced that God was outmoded, a belief that colored his ensuing career as an award-winning journalist at the Chicago Tribune. Science had made the idea of a Creator irrelevantโor so Strobel thought.
But today science is pointing in a different direction. In recent years, a diverse and impressive body of research has increasingly supported the conclusion that the universe was intelligently designed. At the same time, Darwinism has faltered in the face of concrete facts and hard reason. Has science discovered God? At the very least, itโs giving faith an immense boost as new findings emerge about the incredible complexity of our universe.
Join Strobel as he reexamines the theories that once led him away from God. Through his compelling and highly readable account, youโll encounter the mind-stretching discoveries from cosmology, cellular biology, DNA research, astronomy, physics, and human consciousness that present astonishing evidence inย The Case for a Creator. Christian Women’s Book Club List
You can also use this resource to help you find good books for a Christian women’s book club. Some friends and I are starting what we are calling a “No Pressure Book Club” in January. Each person will pick their own book and once a month she will share a little about what she learned. If she didn’t finish the book after one month, that’s ok! The point is that we come together and find out what God is showing one another. We have already seen that several on this list make the best Christian book club books!
Tips for choosing a book for your group:
- Pick something with built-in discussion questions if your group is newer or meets less often, since it takes the pressure off whoever’s leading.
- A memoir or story-driven book (like It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way) tends to open people up more than a straight teaching book.
- If your group is mixed in life stage, a book on a universal theme like identity or grace will land better than one aimed at a specific season, like new motherhood.
This list of books is not helpful to find Christian books for women’s book clubs but is also a great resource for church ministry teams looking for Christian books for women’s groups and Bible studies.

FAQ: Top Christian Books for Women
For those of you who want to get in the habit of reading, don’t let this list overwhelm you.ย How do you eat an elephant?!?ย One bite at a time.ย My challenge to you is to pick ONE book off this list and start.
Pick a time to read each day and set a very small attainable goal to read.ย Say you set a goal to read 5 pages every night before you go to bed.ย Before you know it, you won’t have to work to maintain your goal each day because reading will be a part of your day you look forward to!ย So now, go pick that book!
Look for books that meet you in your season of life – whether your 30’s is about balancing your career, getting married, raising a family or a combination. Find Your People by Jennie Allen and Messy Beautiful Friendship by Christine Hoover are wanting to cultivate community in your life. For the overwhelm that can come in this stage of life, try Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist or The Next Right Thing by Emily P. Freeman.
The best Christian self-help books pair practical tools with biblical truth, so you get real transformation instead of just a pep talk. Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen tackles toxic thought patterns, and Try Softer by Aundi Kolber offers a Christian counselor’s approach to anxiety and perfectionism. For letting go of control, Lysa TerKeurst’s newest book, Making Peace with What I Can’t Control, is a great pick. Check out the section above on Best Christian Self-Help Books for Women
Some of the most beloved female Christian authors include Lysa TerKeurst, Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore, Ann Voskamp, Jennie Allen, and Sarah Young, author of Jesus Calling. Each has a distinct voice, from deep Bible study to gentle, poetic devotionals. You’ll find a short introduction to each in my Favorite Female Christian Authors section above.
Choose books that have discussion questions at the end of each chapter or order to encourage honest conversation. Consider one that comes with a study guide. Lysa TerKeurst’s Making Peace with What I Can’t Control and Jennie Allen’s The Lie You Don’t Know You Believe both have video studies, which makes leading a group easy. If your group prefers fiction, Hearts on the Fly by Toni Shiloh is a sweet, faith-filled story with plenty to discuss.
If you’re new to faith, start with something that helps you read the Bible for yourself rather than only reading about it. I love The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble because it walks you through all of Scripture in a year with short, approachable daily readings. Pair it with a gentle devotional like Jesus Calling by Sarah Young so your time with God feels like a conversation, not homework.

Thank you so much James! I really appreciate that.
You have compiled a fantastic list! So many I already have on my TBR list for the year so I feel I have a good start on the year. I am reading Choices right now, it’s by Jacquelyn Lynn. It’s so good, I love a contemporary story and she’s nailed it. Her inspirational stuff is what I read from her mostly, but this one is too good not to read! joyfulcupstory.com is her site with her info, she is amazing!
Check out Indie Author Minnie Letcher on Amazon. Her books are free this week.
Thanks Carrie! I’ll do that.
Hi Karen..I love your creative ideas…I really do, you are truly gifted…However I am asking you to be careful when it comes to promoting books especially for women. Not sure if you have really researched some of these writers?..especially Lisa Tyrkeust for example…please ask God for DISCERNMENT because many women will just innocently follow.
Thank you so much for your sweet encouragement Shelley. I really appreciate that. Feel free to email me at renovatedfaith@gmail.com with any concerns. Have a good day!
